My name is Lachlan Caligari and I am an architecture student studying at RMIT University. I am currently in my second-year undergraduate bachelor's degree, undertaking Conor Todd's Reworking the Library Studio. This studio is focused on practical design, utilising traditional architectural drafting to problem solve and redevelop.

I look forward to incorporating the skills I have learnt in previous studios, such as Jolimont, led by Dr Jan van Shaik and Tectonic Behaviours led by Charles Boman and Roland Snooks. Working alongside these architectural researchers has opened my eyes to the possibilities of algorithmic design, three-dimensional printing and form making.

I have always been interested in Architecture; from large commercial structures such as the Google North Bayshore project, GCCP, designed by Bjarke Ingels and his firm BIG Architects, to more personalised residential projects such as those designed by SOATA, a South African architectural firm which I truly admire. I am inspired by these firms and their use of Modernist motifs. I am passionate about Modern architecture and look forward to implementing what I have learnt into my reworking of the classically designed State Library.

I have been fortunate enough to travel around some extraordinary parts of the world. I have travelled around most of Australia, I have travelled to Sri Lanka and was fortunate enough to travel around most of Europe. I feel humbled to have had the opportunity visit Sri Lanka and witness breath-taking architectural systems, where something as simple as tree branches acted as structural beams supporting cladding made from sticks and scrub. Furthermore, traveling around Europe gave me the opportunity to witness some of the more famous architectural projects that we hear of in everyday society. This included the works of Gaudi in Barcelona where limitations are barely apparent, and options/ideas are endless. Once again, I am excited to invigorate my proposed redevelopment of the State Library with these influences in mind.
